Louisiana announced an increase in SNAP benefits beginning October 1st, 2022 in response to increased cost of living. This is the second more recent increase, the first of which was on October 1st, 2021 and was the first reevaluation of the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) in 45 years.
The cost of food has increased 11.4% from August 2021 to August 2022 and is expected to increase by 9-10% for all foods across 2022, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The rising costs across the United States is making it increasingly difficult for people to afford day-to-day necessities, like food. The increased SNAP benefits in Louisiana will be extremely helpful for those who live in Louisiana and have experienced impacts to their budget due to the rising cost of food.
